Mitt Romney is not a supporter of culture. The contender for Obama in the upcoming presidential elections has planned a serie of heavy cuts to reduce spending, and in his target are also the arts funding: “First there are programs I would eliminate. Obamacare being one of them but also various subsidy programs — the Amtrak subsidy, the PBS subsidy, the subsidy for the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities.” This means that (if elected) Romney will completely eliminate the fund for the American culture. The Washington Post instead points out the savings that could be obtained from the infamous cuts:“Here’s how it breaks down: In fiscal year 2012, the federal government spent $1.42 billion on Amtrak, $444 million on PBS, and $146 million on the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities. Getting rid of all these subsidies would have saved the government about $2 billion this year — chump change relative to the scale of cuts that Romney wants.” In our opinion, cutting the culture is not a good way to grow a nation.

Il contendente di Obama alle prossime Presidenziali deve per forza di cose far belle figura con il suo elettorato inviperito dalla crisi economica. La soluzione migliore è quindi quella di operare pesanti tagli alle spese pubbliche: “Per prima cosa ci sono dei programmi che vorrei eliminare. Obamacare è uno di questi ma ci sono anche altri programmi che giudico superflui, come il National Endowment for the Arts”. Questo significa che (se eletto) Romney eliminerà completamente il fondo per la cultura statunitense. Il Washington Post invece puntualizza il risparmio che si potrebbe ottenere dai famigerati tagli: “Nell’anno fiscale 2012, il governo ha speso circa 146 milioni di dollari per il National Endowment for the Arts, il taglio di questi ed altri programmi potrebbe portare un risparmio di 2 miliardi di dollari quest’anno, esattamente la cifra che Romney vuole risparmiare”. Secondo noi risparmiare sulla cultura non è certo un buon modo per far crescere una nazione.
